Zirconia Crowns in Turkey: When You Really Need One and How Long They Last
By the Lamis Clinic Dental Team, Istanbul · Updated October 2026
Short answer: a zirconia crown is a strong ceramic cap that covers a whole tooth. It’s the right choice for a tooth that is broken, heavily filled, root-treated or sitting on an implant — not for a healthy tooth that only needs a new colour. Well-made zirconia crowns commonly last 10–15 years or more.
What zirconia is
Zirconia is a very strong, tooth-coloured ceramic with no metal inside, so there’s no grey line at the gum. It’s popular for back teeth, bridges and implant crowns, where chewing forces are highest.
When you really need a crown
A cracked or broken tooth
Large old fillings with little natural tooth left
A root-canal-treated tooth that is weaker
A dental implant, which always needs a crown on top
A bridge replacing a missing tooth
If your tooth is healthy and you only want a whiter or straighter look, a veneer, bonding or whitening usually keeps more of your natural tooth. See veneers vs crowns.

Solid vs layered zirconia
Solid (monolithic) zirconia: one block — very strong and resistant to chipping; often best for back teeth and people who grind.
Layered zirconia: a zirconia core with porcelain on top for extra translucency — beautiful on front teeth, but the top layer can chip.
A five-year study of more than 1,100 zirconia restorations found 96.3% still in place. Almost all failures came from layered porcelain chipping; solid zirconia had none in that study.
Zirconia or E-max?
E-max is slightly more translucent and often chosen for front teeth and veneers. Zirconia is stronger and suits back teeth, bridges and implants. Many smiles use both — see E-max vs zirconia.
How long it takes in Istanbul
Most crown treatments take about 5–7 days: exam and preparation, a try-in, then the final fitting and bite check.
Looking after your crowns
Brush twice a day and clean between teeth — the tooth under a crown can still decay at the edge.
Wear a night guard if you grind.
See your dentist at home for regular check-ups.

Questions patients ask us
Do zirconia crowns look natural? Yes, when the shade and shape are planned carefully. Layered or high-translucency zirconia looks most natural on front teeth.
Can a zirconia crown break? It’s very strong, but nothing is unbreakable. Avoid biting ice or hard objects and wear a night guard if you grind.
Will I need a root canal before a crown? Not always — only if the nerve is damaged or infected. Your X-ray will show us.
