"Turkey Teeth": Veneers or Crowns? How to Get a Natural Smile in Istanbul
By the Lamis Clinic Dental Team, Istanbul · Updated October 2026
Short answer: most viral "Turkey teeth" are not veneers at all. They are full crowns placed on healthy teeth. A real veneer keeps most of your tooth; a crown files it down on every side. Knowing the difference is the single best way to protect your smile.
What people mean by "Turkey teeth"
The phrase started on TikTok as a joke about over-white, identical, blocky smiles. Today Europeans search it simply to mean "dental work in Turkey". Behind the joke is a real problem: some low-cost providers sell "veneers" and deliver crowns, because crowns are faster to fit.
Veneers vs crowns at a glance
Porcelain veneer (e.g. E-max)
Covers the front surface of the tooth only
Removes about 0.3–0.7 mm of enamel, sometimes none
Best for healthy teeth needing a new colour, shape or small alignment change
Low long-term risk when bonded to healthy enamel
Full crown (zirconia or E-max)
Covers the whole tooth, on all sides
Removes most of the outer tooth — it becomes a "peg"
Best for broken, heavily filled or root-treated teeth
Not reversible; risk of nerve damage and future root canals on healthy teeth
Dental research comparisons show crown preparation removes several times more tooth than a veneer. Enamel never grows back.
Why some smiles look fake

Natural teeth are not one flat colour. They are slightly translucent at the edges, warmer near the gum, and each tooth has its own shape. Fake-looking results usually come from three choices:
A shade that is too white for the person's skin and eyes.
Opaque material with no translucency.
Identical, square teeth copied across the whole arch.
At Lamis Clinic we design the smile around your face — lip line, gum line and the shape of your canines — and choose a shade that looks bright in photos but believable in daylight.
Three questions to ask any clinic
Which teeth get veneers, which get crowns, and which get nothing? A good plan is often mixed.
How much will each tooth be reduced? Ask for it in writing.
Why a crown? If a healthy tooth is down for a crown, ask for the clinical reason.
Also watch the wording: "zirconia veneers" in a package often means crowns.
Our approach
We use the least invasive option that gets you the result: whitening or bonding where that's enough, veneers on healthy teeth, crowns only where a tooth truly needs one. Before your final teeth are made, you wear temporary teeth in your new smile design, so you can see, feel and approve the shape and colour. Only when you're happy do we make the final ones, in E-max or zirconia from Ivoclar, a leading dental materials maker based in Liechtenstein.
Questions patients ask us
Can I see my new smile before it's final? Yes. You try temporary teeth in the new design first, and we only make the final E-max or zirconia teeth once you approve them.
How many veneers do I need? Many patients need 6–10 upper teeth, the ones that show when you smile — not 20. It depends on your smile width.
How long do veneers last? Porcelain veneers can last 10–15 years or more with good care and regular check-ups.
Can I get veneers without filing my teeth? Sometimes. Minimal-prep and no-prep veneers suit certain cases; we'll tell you honestly if you are one.
