Short answer: yes, a second rhinoplasty is sometimes needed — usually because the result isn’t what was hoped for, scar tissue inside the nose affects breathing, or the nose was knocked while it was still healing. Most surgeons advise waiting until swelling has fully settled, often around a year, before deciding.

“Yes, it could be necessary. It may be due to not achieving the desired outcome. It could be related to adhesions inside the nose after surgery, or tissue regrowth inside the nose causing breathing issues. Or, if the nose is hit — especially within three months — causing it to deviate, another surgery could be needed.” — Dr. İsmail Barut, Plastic Surgeon

The four main reasons for revision

  1. The shape isn’t right: a hump remains, the tip droops or looks pinched, or the nose is asymmetric.

  2. Adhesions inside the nose: bands of scar tissue form between the inner walls and block airflow.

  3. Tissue regrowth: tissue inside the nose grows back and narrows the airway.

  4. An injury while healing: a knock, especially in the first three months, can shift the bones and make the nose deviate.

When to wait — and when not to

  • Wait: if your concern is shape, swelling can hide the final result for up to a year, especially at the tip. Many worries settle on their own.

  • Don’t wait: if your nose was hit and looks crooked, or you have new, worsening breathing problems, contact your surgeon promptly.

How to protect your result after rhinoplasty

  • Avoid contact sports and anything that could knock your nose for at least three months.

  • Don’t rest glasses on your nose until your surgeon allows it.

  • Keep follow-up appointments, even by video, so problems are spotted early.

  • Send photos to your clinic if something changes — early advice can prevent a bigger problem.

Why revision is more complex

A second operation works with tissue that has already been changed and scarred. It often needs more planning, sometimes cartilage grafts to rebuild support, and a surgeon experienced in revision work. That’s why choosing carefully the first time matters.

Questions patients ask us

How soon can I have a revision? For shape concerns, usually after about a year. For a breathing problem or an injury, your surgeon may advise sooner.

Can a revision fix breathing and shape together? Often yes — the same operation can open the airway and refine the shape.
