Short answer: yes. Rhinoplasty can be done purely for looks, purely to improve breathing, or for both at the same time. If you struggle to breathe through your nose and also want to change its shape, both can usually be corrected in one operation.

“It depends on the patient’s concerns — whether the procedure is intended for aesthetic improvement, functional breathing correction, or both. The surgery can be performed purely for cosmetic purposes, to enhance breathing, or to address both aspects at the same time.” — Dr. İsmail Barut, Plastic Surgeon

Common causes of a blocked nose

  • Deviated septum: the wall between the nostrils is bent, narrowing one side

  • Enlarged turbinates: swollen tissue inside the nose blocks airflow

  • Narrow or weak nasal valves: the sides of the nose collapse when you breathe in

  • Previous injury or surgery: a broken nose or earlier operation that changed the inner structure

Signs your nose may be a breathing problem, not just a cosmetic one

  • One side always feels blocked

  • You breathe through your mouth, especially at night

  • Snoring or dry mouth in the morning

  • Nasal sprays help only for a short time

What happens in a functional rhinoplasty

Your surgeon examines the inside of your nose, not just its shape. During surgery, the septum can be straightened (septoplasty), inner structures reduced or supported, and — if you want — the outside reshaped at the same time. This combination is often called septorhinoplasty.

Recovery and how long to stay

  • Most patients stay in Istanbul about 7–10 days, until the splint is removed and the surgeon has checked healing.

  • Breathing can feel blocked for the first weeks while swelling settles — this is normal.

  • Bruising usually fades in about two weeks; fine swelling, especially at the tip, can take a year to settle.

  • Protect your nose from knocks for the first three months.

Questions to ask your surgeon

  • Will you examine the inside of my nose as well as the shape?

  • Will you correct my septum or valves in the same operation?

  • How will you keep the result looking natural while improving airflow?

Questions patients ask us

Will my nose look different if I only fix breathing? Not necessarily. Functional work can be done inside the nose with little or no visible change, if that’s what you want.

Can I fix my breathing and change the shape together? Yes — that’s very common, and it means one surgery and one recovery.
