Turkey, and Istanbul in particular, has become one of the most popular destinations for dental care among patients from the United States, the UK and the rest of Europe. Lower costs are part of the reason, but the decision should never rest on price alone. This guide explains how dental treatment in Turkey usually works, what a good treatment plan looks like and the questions worth asking before you book a flight.

Why patients travel to Turkey for dental treatment

  • Access and timing. Many patients face long waiting lists or limited availability at home for implants, crowns or cosmetic dentistry.

  • Modern clinics and materials. The implant systems, ceramic materials and digital scanners used in Western Europe and the US are widely available in Istanbul.

  • Treatment planned around travel. Clinics that work with international patients organise several steps over consecutive days, which suits people travelling a long distance.

  • Direct flights. Istanbul is a major aviation hub with direct connections to most European capitals and many US cities.

None of these benefits matter if the clinical plan is wrong, so the rest of this guide focuses on how to judge quality.

The most common dental treatments

Dental implants

An implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. Once the bone has bonded to the implant, a crown is fixed on top. Most implant cases need more than one visit because the bone needs time to heal.

Crowns

A crown covers the whole visible part of a tooth. Crowns are the right choice for teeth that are broken, heavily filled or root-treated, but they require more of the natural tooth to be removed than veneers.

Veneers

A veneer is a thin ceramic shell bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Veneers suit teeth that are reasonably straight and healthy and need a change in colour, shape or proportion.

E-max and zirconia restorations

E-max (lithium disilicate) is valued for its natural translucency, while zirconia is known for its strength. Your dentist should explain which material suits each tooth and why.

How a well-planned treatment works

  1. Remote assessment. You send recent photos, any X-rays or a panoramic scan, and details of your dental and medical history.

  2. Preliminary plan. A dentist reviews your case and outlines the options. This plan stays provisional until you are examined in person.

  3. In-clinic examination. On arrival you have a clinical examination, up-to-date X-rays or a 3D scan, and a gum assessment. The plan is then confirmed or adjusted.

  4. Treatment. Depending on the plan, this may take a few days (for example crowns or veneers on healthy teeth) or two visits several months apart (most implant cases).

  5. Review and records. Before you fly home you should receive copies of your X-rays, a written list of the work done, the materials used and aftercare instructions.

How many days do you need in Istanbul?

There is no honest single answer, because it depends on what is planned. As a general guide:

  • Whitening or a few fillings: usually a short stay.

  • Crowns or veneers: often around a week, to allow preparation, laboratory work, try-in and final fitting.

  • Implants: typically two trips. The first places the implant; the second, usually a few months later, fits the final crown or bridge once the bone has healed.

Be cautious of any offer that promises a complete full-mouth transformation in a few days without first examining you.

How to check a dental clinic in Turkey

  • Ministry of Health authorisation. Since 2017, healthcare providers that serve international patients in Turkey need an International Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate from the Ministry of Health. Ask whether the clinic holds one.

  • Who will treat you. Ask for the name of the dentist, their field and how long they have practised. Our team is introduced on the Our Doctors page.

  • A written, tooth-by-tooth plan. It should list each procedure, the materials and brands, and what happens if a complication occurs.

  • Conservative options. A good dentist discusses less invasive alternatives, such as whitening, bonding or orthodontics, and tells you when a treatment is not necessary.

  • Aftercare. Ask what follow-up is available once you are home and whether the clinic can share records with your local dentist.

Before you travel

  • Tell your dentist at home about your plans and ask for copies of your records.

  • Check that your travel insurance covers treatment abroad and possible complications.

  • Plan to stay until your dentist confirms the work is complete and you are comfortable.

  • Keep your schedule flexible in case an extra appointment is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is dental treatment in Turkey safe?

It can be, when you choose an authorised clinic, a qualified dentist and a plan based on a proper examination. The risks are the same as anywhere: they increase when treatment is rushed or more invasive than it needs to be.

Can I get a treatment plan before I travel?

Yes. Most clinics, including ours, can review photos and X-rays and suggest options in advance. The final plan is always confirmed after an in-person examination.

Can my dentist at home look after the work later?

In most cases, yes. Crowns, veneers and implants made with widely used systems can be maintained elsewhere, which is why written records of the materials and implant brand matter.
