Short answer: breast augmentation is usually a 1–2 hour operation under general anaesthetic. Plan to stay in Istanbul for about 7–10 days so your surgeon can check you before you fly. Implants are long-lasting but not lifetime devices — our surgeon generally advises replacing them after around 10–15 years.

How long does breast augmentation last?

“If only an implant is placed, it can generally be used for around 10 to 15 years. After that, it’s beneficial to change the implant. If a lift or reduction was done, it depends on the person’s weight and pregnancy — but if there’s no weight change after childbirth, it can typically last 15 to 20 years.” — Dr. İsmail Barut, Plastic Surgeon

This matches international guidance: the American Society of Plastic Surgeons notes that implants are not lifetime devices and that many are replaced or removed 10–20 years after surgery.

Choosing your implants

  • Size and profile — measured to your chest width and skin, not just a cup size

  • Shape — round or anatomical (teardrop)

  • Placement — over or under the chest muscle

  • Incision — usually in the fold under the breast

A natural result comes from an implant that fits your frame. Ask to see before-and-after photos of patients with a similar body to yours.

How long to stay in Istanbul

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons advises staying in the country for 1–2 weeks after a general-anaesthetic operation of up to 3 hours, and arriving at least 72 hours before surgery. For breast augmentation that usually means:

  • 2–3 days before: consultation, tests and final planning

  • Surgery day: usually one night of observation

  • Days 2–7: rest at your hotel, check-ups with your surgeon

  • Days 7–10: final check and fit-to-fly sign-off

Recovery, week by week

  • Week 1: tightness and soreness; a support bra day and night; short walks to help circulation

  • Weeks 2–3: most people return to desk work; no lifting or upper-body exercise

  • Weeks 4–6: gradual return to exercise as your surgeon allows

  • Months 3–6: implants settle into their final position

Long-term care

  • For silicone implants, the FDA recommends a first scan 5–6 years after surgery, then every 2–3 years.

  • A rare lymphoma called BIA-ALCL has been linked mainly to textured implants — ask which surface your implants have.

  • Keep your implant card with the brand, size and serial number for your doctor at home.

  • Pregnancy and big weight changes can change the shape of your breasts again, as Dr. Barut explains above.

Questions to ask your surgeon

  • How many breast augmentations do you perform?

  • Which implant brand and surface do you use?

  • Where will the operation take place, and who gives the anaesthetic?

  • Who checks me after surgery, and how do I reach you once I’m home?

Questions patients ask us

Is breast augmentation painful? Most patients describe tightness and soreness for the first few days, managed with prescribed pain relief.

Can I breastfeed after augmentation? Many women can. Tell your surgeon if you plan to, as it can affect the incision and placement choice.

When can I sleep on my side? Usually after about 4–6 weeks, once your surgeon agrees.
