Istanbul is widely regarded as one of the world's leading destinations for hair transplant surgery. Every year, many patients from Europe and North America travel there for FUE or DHI. With so many clinics and offers, it helps to understand the techniques and what really determines a natural result.

How a hair transplant works

A hair transplant moves healthy hair follicles from a donor area, usually the back and sides of the scalp, to areas where hair is thinning. Hair in the donor area is generally resistant to the hormone that causes male-pattern hair loss, which is why transplanted hair tends to keep growing.

The main techniques differ in how follicles are extracted and implanted.

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

Individual follicular units are removed one by one from the donor area with a small punch tool. Tiny channels are then opened in the recipient area, and the grafts are placed into them.

  • Leaves small dot-like marks rather than a linear scar

  • Suitable for covering larger areas

  • Usually requires shaving the donor area

Sapphire FUE

This is a variation of FUE in which the recipient channels are opened with blades made of sapphire instead of steel. Sapphire blades are very sharp and smooth, allowing fine, precise incisions. Many clinics use them for dense, natural-looking placement.

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation)

In DHI, extraction is similar to FUE, but implantation uses a pen-like instrument, often called a Choi implanter. It creates the channel and places the graft in a single step.

  • Allows precise control of angle, direction and depth

  • Often used to add density or refine the hairline

  • Can sometimes be performed with less shaving of the recipient area

Which technique is best?

There is no single best technique for everyone. The right choice depends on:

  • The size of the area to be covered

  • Donor area density and hair characteristics

  • Your hairline design and density goals

  • The surgeon's experience with each method

Some clinics combine methods within one session. What matters most is a realistic plan and skilled hands.

Are you a good candidate?

You may be a good candidate if:

  • Your hair loss pattern has stabilised to some degree

  • You have a healthy donor area with sufficient density

  • You are in good general health

  • You have realistic expectations about density and coverage

Younger patients whose hair loss is still progressing may be advised to consider medical treatment first and to plan for future loss, so the transplanted hair continues to look natural over time.

What happens on the day

  1. Consultation and hairline design, agreed with you before anything begins

  2. Shaving and preparation of the donor area

  3. Local anaesthesia

  4. Graft extraction

  5. Channel opening and implantation

  6. Bandaging and aftercare instructions

The procedure usually takes most of a day. Most patients return to the clinic the next day or two for a check and the first gentle wash.

How to choose a hair transplant clinic in Istanbul

  • Know who performs each step. Ask which parts of the procedure the doctor performs and which are done by technicians.

  • Realistic graft numbers. Be wary of very high graft counts promised before your donor area has been assessed.

  • Hairline design. A natural hairline is designed for your age and face, not copied from a template.

  • Authorisation. Facilities that treat international patients in Turkey need Ministry of Health authorisation for health tourism.

  • Aftercare. Ask what follow-up you will receive during the months of regrowth.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?

Many patients stay around three days: arrival and consultation, the procedure, and a follow-up check with the first wash.

Is a hair transplant painful?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. Most discomfort is felt when the anaesthetic is given; mild soreness afterwards is common and usually manageable.

When will I see results?

Transplanted hair usually sheds within the first few weeks. New growth typically starts after about three to four months, and the final result can take a year or longer.
